Prayer Emphasis
Remember: Begin every day with The Lord’s Prayer!

One of the great early church fathers was Chrysotom. He served in Constantinople and
preached daily to thousands of people.  We have one of his prayers to guide us in our
prayer life through July. “Let us , therefore not cling to fleeting things, which slip away
and depart, but to those which are enduring and immovable.  May we all attain them
through the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with
whom be glory to the Father and the Holy Spirit , now and always, for ever and ever.
Amen.”

The Summer Olympics will soon begin.  Athletes who have trained for many years will be
giving their absolute best to win medals.  However, the real goal of the Olympics is much
greater than the winning of medals, it is to challenge each athlete to perform at their
highest level, to learn to compete with a healthy pride that does not encourage hatred but
respect for each participant.  Each athlete endures endless repetition in their discipline to
achieve the greatest performance of their talent.

In the church, we have the challenge of being the strongest disciple we can possibly be for
our Lord Jesus Christ.  The vibrant Christianity that we all crave has its foundation in
prayer.  Learning to pray and practicing daily make a tremendous change in the life of
each individual seeking to be a stronger disciple of Jesus.  Like Olympic athletes, let’s pay
the price for optimum performance by praying and following the example of Jesus in our
personal life, in our family life, in our work life,  in our life as a citizen of the nation and of
the world.  John Wesley would say: “The world is my parish.”  Let’s consider ourselves
Christians not bound by bonds of this earth but by heart bonds with Jesus.

Salkehatchie
This year the camp will be here July 13-19.  This will be a relatively large camp of about
40 campers.  Projects have been selected. Housing has been arranged and meals have
been planned.  Most expenses have been covered by the youth but help is needed with
incidentals.  Items needed include bottled water, trash bags, insect spray, work gloves,
heavy duty extension cords, and monetary donations.  Contact Mary Bailey or the church
office for more information  Keep this year’s young people and their leaders in your
prayers.

United Methodist Men
“Thank you” to all the men who helped support the Red Cross Golf Tournament.  All the
proceeds go to help families in Dillon County.   When all the funds are in, about $5,000
should go to this community ministry. UMM is a great ministry and open to all men of the
church.  Regular meetings are the 3rd Saturday at 8:00 am in the fellowship hall.

July 4 Picnic
July 4, at 6:00 pm we will have a Patriotic Picnic at the “Beaver Dam Hunting Club”.
Directions are “EZ” - as you travel toward Clio on Hwy. #9 after leaving Little Rock, there
is a “fork in the road”.  Take the “road less traveled by” - it’s Hwy. 57 - go about 2 miles,
you pass a lake on the right and immediately after the lake, turn right (there will be
balloons and a sign pointing the way) go about a mile and take a sharp left on a small two
rut road, can’t miss it!  Hunting club is a few hundred yards on the right.  This is a covered
dish event. The church will provide drinks, cups, ice and utensils. Children are
encouraged to bring their bikes, we’ll ride some on the dirt roads.  Also, someone might
want to go “fishin”.  We’ll have some fun with patriotic trivia, some “special guitar music”
and maybe even an extra surprise!  See ya there!

“DARE TO CHANGE THE WORLD”
First, I would like to thank you, the congregation of Main Street, for sending me as a
delegate to the Annual Conference that met in Florence, June 1-4.  With Robin’s guidance
and help, I found it very enlightening and challenging time. Each morning began with a
Bible Study conducted by H. Eddie Fox, whose message was about faith-sharing.  This was
followed each day by a Communion Service, which was an extremely moving experience.
Then the business of the South Carolina Conference was brought before all the delegates.
The actual items to be voted on were discussed and then accepted.  The items to be
addressed were reports of the difference committees and resolutions of current issues.
There were none of any earth shaking importance.

Tuesday afternoon was designated as the Great Day of Service.  Each delegate was asked
to give tree hours to go into Florence community serve the people by performing
difference tasks (yard work repairing and painting housed, serving meals at shelters,
witnessing to people on the streets, etc.) I volunteered to arrange clothes in the
Disabilities Thrift Store. This was a meaningful activity.

The point of the Conference as the Sending Forth Service and the Fixing of
Appointments.  As Mark 16:15 states, “Go into the world and proclaim the Good News to
creation.

In His Service,
Chris Harris

Forget-Me-Not
One of our goals as student leaders is to develop healthy intergenerational relationships
within our church.  God-honoring intergenerational connections can be vital in helping
teenagers transition into adult church life.  One way we hope to bring this about is through
a ministry called “Forget-Me-Not”.  This ministry will initially function as leadership
development through service in our Young Methodist Youth and Methodist Youth
Fellowship.  We want to focus on our members who are unable to join us for church
fellowship or those who have specific needs that we can meet, such as assistance with yard
work or simple projects.  If there is any way that our students can minister, please contact
us.  We will also plan intentional opportunities for intergenerational fellowship
throughout the year.  Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated!  Please keep this
ministry in your prayers!

In His Service,
Sheldon and Shelley Bethea
